Things to Consider Before Moving

One thing is for certain: the current sales market is going gangbusters. The median list price for homes across the United States is the highest it’s ever been and that might make some want to sell while the getting is good. However, there are important questions one must ask themselves before pulling the trigger on selling. Here they are! 

Moving Costs

Mortgage and sales related expenses are the only thing to factor into selling your home. After all, you have to have somewhere else to live, right? Generally that means hauling your stuff from Point A to Point B. Gone are the days where we’re loading ill-packed boxes into the back of our cousin’s truck and hoping for the best. Now is the time to consider professional movers. But those come at a cost! On average, a local move under 100 miles will run you around $1,700. With added weight and distance, that number can balloon to up to $6,000. 

Cost of Living

Cost of living is definitely something to research, especially if you’ve decided to move to an entirely different city or state. Differing climates affect utilities and energy usage. You may be used to a Carolina summer which will use energy in a different way than, say, Arizona. Other things to consider are food costs, local taxes, and gas prices. 

Culture

Before you move, be sure to visualize what you want for your life. Be realistic! Charlotte, for example, is a burgeoning center of banking and finance and we’re seeing more and more activities and experiences geared toward the young professional, potentially partnered. Think: dual income, no kids. Not to say Charlotte isn’t a great place to raise a family, but be sure you look at each neighborhood so you know what you’re getting. Do you prefer the calm of a suburban, kid-friendly neighborhood, or the hustle and bustle of city nightlife?
