The tiny town of Troutman is located in Iredell County, roughly 35 miles north of Charlotte. U.S. Route 21 is the town’s main thoroughfare, connecting it to Mooresville from the South and Statesville to the North. So even though Troutman itself is small, you’re surrounded by bigger towns and cities.

History of the town goes all the way back to the 1750s when immigrants came to the area to farm. They cleared land, built homes, and made a lovely life for themselves. In 1778, the Troutman family decided they wanted this lovely life as well. John Jacob Troutman, a young boy of 11, moved to the area with his mother after his father’s death. Despite his young age, John Troutman became an immediate land owner, owning more than 200 acres. Over time, that grew to more than 2,000 acres. His name and family grew to the point where it was synonymous with the area and everyone began calling the town Troutman.

Today, the median age of a Troutman resident has gone up from 11 but is still only 38. The town has a great, youthful energy and is the pure embodiment of sweet, Southern charm. All your neighbors know your name, the town never met a festival it didn’t like, and the sun sets over Lake Norman.

And the Livin’ Is Easy

Annual festivals and activities abound. Favorites include the annual Easter Egg hunt, the weekly Farmer’s Market Tuesdays from 4-7pm May-September at Troutman ESC Park, and the Troutman Front Porch Fest with live music, crafts, and food & drink. Front Porch Fest is very popular and is held on Main Street in downtown on the second Saturday in May.

When not festival-ing, locals love Main Street businesses. Area favorites include Randy’s Bar-b-Que (voted best BBQ in North Carolina!), Pellegrino’s Trattoria, and Julia’s Talley House. Enjoy Troutman Park, learn all about animals at Zootastic Park, or visit Davidson House, a National Registered Historic Place.
