Blog > The Low Down on Doormats
They say you never get another chance to make a first impression. The same goes for when people visit your house for the first time. They walk up the front steps to ring the doorbell, and before a human ever opens the door they are greeted by a doormat. Yes, doormats serve a function (cleaning shoes, helping to keep dirt and debris out of your entryway, etc.) but its specific design will send a message and say something about you as a homeowner.
So, even though it may be a minor item on your home shopping list, it still deserves consideration. Here are a few things to think about when looking for a new doormat!
Size
Make sure that the size of the doormat is proportional to both your front door and porch. The general rule of thumb is to choose a mat that is at least 80% of the total width of your door. If you have double or French doors, you may find yourself with a doormat up to 60” wide.
Location
Obviously the most common location for a doormat is, well… by your front door. But more and more people are choosing to also use them inside entryways and mudrooms. This serves double duty. Not only do outdoor mats catch the bulk of mud, snow, ice, and dirt from your shoes, but an interior mat can help take care of the rest.
Material
Doormats can be made from any number of materials, from natural materials like thick grasses and natural fibers to synthetic materials like rubber. You’ll want to choose a material that won’t shed and track in just as much debris as they’re trying to catch. Also, be aware of painted mats and the paint flaking off. After you decide the material, then comes the fun part. The saying! Pick a funny quote or quip, or keep it classic with a monogram or even your address! The options are endless.
