Styling Your Front Porch

With Spring weather coming right around the corner, the days of warm afternoons, sweet smelling flowers, and front porch sittin’ will soon be upon us. Whether you’re enjoying quiet time with a book or lemonade with friends, you definitely want to be comfortable!

As they say, you never get another chance to make a first impression. Why not start with your front porch? After all, it’s the first thing guests see when they arrive at your home. Extend that famous Southern Hospitality out onto the porch and you’re sure to leave a lasting good impression.

Southern Living recently shared their secrets to styling the perfect front porch. Here they are!

Offer Comfortable Seating

If you have the space, a cozy seating is the best way to welcome guests. You don’t have to have a huge 12-seater sectional. All it takes is a bench or a few chairs layered with colors and textures. Decorate around a vibrant rug, colorful throw pillows, and live plants. The more comfortable and lived-in your space looks, the more at-home your guests will feel.

Pay Attention to Lighting

On warm nights after the sun has set, you’ll still need light to see your friends. Steer away from anything fluorescent or lights that make the space feel too “sterile.” Opt for warm light bulbs, string lights, or lamps on side tables. Of course, it’s always smart to go with a classic stand-by: the warm glow of a citronella candle. Its effect is two-fold… soft light and bug repellent!

Go Green!

The most inviting porches are teeming with life. What better way to show that life than with live plants? Decorate with potted plants, classic Southern hanging ferns, small trees to add height, or even container vegetables. These plants invite wildlife like butterflies and hummingbirds. They also add color and will never go out of style.

Make Your Door a Focal Point

The main idea behind styling your front porch is that you’re inviting guests to your home. Of course that means one thing for sure: a front door greeting. It’s the one thing that those driving or walking past will definitely see and making it a focal point really draws in the guest. Keep it balanced by flanking it with matching plants, paint it with a pop of color, and dress it up with a seasonally appropriate wreath. But most importantly- don’t forget a fun doormat!

Thanks to Southern Living for the inspiration!
