Alright… you’ve sold the house. You’ve bought the new one. You boxed up allllll your belongings and loaded the truck. Now, it’s move-in day at your new home. Even though you’ve dotted all your i’s and crossed all your t’s, there are still a few things you’ll want to prep to make sure your move-in day is seamless, easy, and low-stress. Here are some ideas!

Snacks and Drinks

This may seem like an obvious one but move-in day does not automatically equate to a time when you’ll be ready to use your kitchen. After a long day of hauling boxes and unpacking things, the last thing you’re going to want to have to think about is cooking a meal. Show up handy with pre-packaged snacks and cold drinks. Additionally, you’re going to want to have a cooler packed with ice. Perhaps a refrigerator didn’t convey with the sale of the home, or if it did, there’s no guarantee that the freezer is already stocked with ice.

*EXTRA* Boxcutters

Sure, having a sturdy boxcutter on hand is a no-brainer. But have you any idea how often you set down a boxcutter and then are unable to find it again? Picking up an extra two or five is a great idea. Keep an extra in your pocket or have one in each room. It will save you a lot of time and steps if you’re not constantly searching for the one boxcutter you have.

New Locks

The thrill and excitement of move-in day might cause you to overlook this one simple yet crucial step. As you arrive at your new home, set up an appointment with a locksmith to change the locks or rekey the doors to your new home. Even if the previous owners handed over their keys, there’s no telling how many people out there might have a spare key to your new home. If a locksmith is out of the budget or isn’t available on move-in day, changing out deadbolts yourself is actually a pretty easy task!

Toiletries

Lastly, pack a quick overnight bag before you even get to move-in day that has clean pajamas, a fresh set of work clothes, and your toiletries. Once your new home is filled with boxes and you’ve spent the day trying to organize your life, there’s no telling if you’ll even know where your shampoo IS. Having a travel bag ready to go will save a lot of time and energy at the end of an already long and exhausting day!
