Blog > Accessible LKN
Being the largest manmade lake in North Carolina at over 32,000 acres means that Lake Norman has something for everyone. And not just every ONE but every BODY, no matter what that body can do. Here are some places in and around Lake Norman that are wheelchair or disabled-body accessible.
Lake Norman State Park
Outside is for all and Lake Norman State Park is committed to ensuring that all parts of its gorgeous park are accessible. The Visitor’s Center, which has 22 marked accessible parking spaces, is entered from ground level. At the Visitor’s Center you can enquire about their reservable beach wheelchairs for beach access. Facilities that have a ramp or wheelchair access include swimming area, the community building, the family campground shower house and the Osprey and Kingfisher picnic shelters.
Dragonfly Nature trail at Lake Norman State Park is 4-feet wide with gentle slopes, as are the access points to the fishing dock and all three park shelters.
YMCA
The Lake Norman YMCA, in partnership with Carolina Rehabilitation, offers the only adaptive water skiing program in North Carolina. The program started in 1996 and now sees about 100 skiers each week throughout the Summer ranging in ages from preschoolers to adults in their 70s. Contact the Lake Norman YMCA for information on scheduling a session, whether you have a YMCA membership or not.
