It never fails… home renovations almost always reveal extra work and surprises. Recently, as shared by CNN, a Portuguese home owner undertaking a home renovation project unearthed what is quite possibly one of the largest discoveries in all of Europe: a dinosaur.

Back in 2017, work was being done on the property when the owner noticed small bone fragments in the soil. Curious about what they might be, he contacted a research team who decided to excavate. What archeologist and paleontologist Steve Brusatte found was a dinosaur ribcage. Now, five years later, the team has uncovered even more and have decided to share the news with the world.

Researchers exhumed parts of what they believe is a fossilized brachiosaurid sauropod skeleton, a family of dinosaurs that included the world’s largest. This particular herbivorous dinosaur is recognized by their long necks and tails. Based on the remains uncovered, the researchers estimate that the dinosaur was around 39 feet tall and 82 feet long.

Dinosaurs from the Brachiosauridae group, which the skeleton is thought to belong to, lived between the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous periods around 160 to 100 million years ago, the press release added. Currently, several important parts of the skeleton have been unearthed including vertebrae and the ribs. Given the condition and rare positioning, it’s believed a full skeleton could be uncovered.

Can you imagine heading out to do a by-the-book renovation project and it turning into a five-year long project involving an entire dinosaur skeleton? We can’t.

We do want to hear your renovation stories, though! Tell us in the comments what crazy experiences you’ve had when it comes to house projects.
